LyX MLA Template

Theresa needs to provide MLA-style “Works Cited” pages with her coursework. I’ve put together two templates for the LyX Document Processor to do just that.

Full MLA Style

This LyX template will create a document conforming to the MLA Style Manual. Download

  • A4 paper (see Document -> Setting… -> Document Class to change this).
  • Double-spaced lines.
  • 1-inch margins.
  • Page number in top right.
  • No fancy fonts or formatting.

If you want your surname to appear in the top right corner of the page, add this TeX code (“evil red text”) to the beginning of the document:

MLA-Style Bibliography Only

If you only need an MLA-style bibliography, this template will create a bibliography conforming quite well to the MLA Style Manual, but without all the font restrictions of the MLA style. Download

The remainder of the document is unaffected.

Recent Changes

  • url field is now used even if there is no urldate field.
  • Most inter-sentence and inter-word spacing fixed.
  • Extra dot after authors only added if required.
  • Better results with BibTeX exported from Zotero.

Zotero

Zotero, at version 1.0.7, does not export the urldate field, which is used in the MLA style. It also exports the URL of a webpage in both the howpublished field and the url field, which causes it to be printed twice.

To fix this, download scrapers.sql and put it in the Zotero directory (replacing the existing scrapers.sql). In the “Advanced” pane of the Zotero preferences window, select “Reset Translators and Styles…”. This is probably only compatible with Zotero 1.0.7.
