![]() | Low-Tech, Low-Maintenance and Low-Cost AquariaMost tropical aquaria take a “high-tech” approach to the problem of keeping fish alive, relying on complex mechanical filters, electric heating and intense lights. These devices are expensive, and failure of any of them can be disastrous. When a filter fails, not only does it stop treating the water in the aquarium, but the bacteria which have colonised the filter, no longer supplied with a stream of oxygenated water, begin to die and pollute the tank. Aquarium heater thermostats are notorious for failing in the “on” position, heating the water to unacceptable temperatures. This article will describe an alternative, “low-tech” approach, which aims to avoid all these problems, and do so at very low cost.
